ARCO NORMANNO

On the conquest of Mazara, Count Ruggero built, between 1072 and 1073, a castle as a bulwark against the invasions of the Saracens. It was probably a courtyard structure and occupied the entire corner of the conjunction of the ruggeriane East and West walls. Count Ruggero, fourth child of King Federico d'Aragona and Queen Eleonora d'Angio was born here in 1318. In 1518 Queen Giovanna, consort of Ferdinando II died here. The pointed ogival door with its elegant double pointed arch is the only element remaining of the castle, which after being destined for use as a prison after the XVI century, was demolished in1880.
