CHIESA DI SAN GIOVANNI BATTISTA

Church of San Giovanni Battista (Saint John the Baptist)

Built between the end of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the 17th century, it was radically transformed between the XVIII e XIX century, including the substitution of the pre-existing cupola with the present one, which might have been based on the one on the cathedral of Palermo. The church holds important works of art: the beautiful marble statue of San Giovanni, by Antonello Gagini (1522), paintings by Gherardo delle Notti, Pietro Novelli and Orazio Ferraro, and also frescoes by Gennaro Pardo from Castelvetrano (1900-1901). There are also some works from the San Domenico church like the fine Madonna di Loreto (1489), attributed to Francesco Laurana, and a copy of the Spasimo di Raffaello (1574) by Giovan Paolo Fundulli.
