QUARTIERE EBRAICO "LA GIUDECCA"

Jewish Quarter

La Giudecca was the Jewish Quarter who, for centuries, lived side by side with the Christians  and who, in about 1442, in the times of Alfonso il Magnanimo, determined the wellbeing of the city with commerce, a sector in which they were experts. They were driven out of Sicily in 1493, leaving traces of their presence in the alleys of the town- via Misericordia, via  Mela (now Mistretta) -  in the courtyards and the houses. An aedicule on the via Mistretta signalled the limit between the Jewish and the Christian quarters.
