Outside this entrance, during the long Sicilian Vesper war (1282-1302), the Angevin soldiers were killed by the sword and some were imprisoned and condemned to death, and this entrance was named because of these executions. It is one of the last three existing entrances and it is surely the one that mainly recalls the Middle Ages.
