DOLINA DI MONTE BUFARA

  • Dolina della Bufara
Dolina della Bufara

This particular cavity in the terrain, surrounded by overhanging walls was identified in a dolina, caused by the subsiding of the limestone rocks underneath. The wide and deep chasm is a clear expression of the karst origins of the whole territory of Custonaci. Inside the pit, called Bufara, like in the surrounding area, typical Mediterranean vegetation grows, characterized by the presence of  prickly pears, mastic trees, oleasters and the always present Dwarf palm, in Sicilian giummarra, the leaves of which were used in olden times by the inhabitants of the zone to make weaved articles.
