Born as a civic museum in 1980, it possesses almost two thousand works by about six hundred great artists including Angeli, Boetti, Capogrossi, Dorazio, Festa, Guttuso, Pirandello, Sanfilippo, Scialoja, Turcato, to name but a few. Also conserved are the plans for works realized outdoors and the Cretto by Burri.
Other than the permanent collection, the museum periodically holds temporary exhibitions. An entire section is dedicated to the exhibition of designs and sketches of scenography for Gibellina Nuova – New Gibellina
